Graduating from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in 1981, he completed his training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the same institution in Ankara, Turkey. From 1992 to 1993, he served as a research fellow at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center – Center for Infectious Disease. In 1996, he received the Roche Scientific Research Award in Turkey and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications.

His research interests include antibiotic resistance, nosocomial infections, HIV, and febrile neutropenia. He is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the American Society for Microbiology, the European AIDS Clinical Society, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the Febrile Neutropenia Society of Turkey, the Antibiotic and Chemotherapy Society, and the Turkish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (KLIMIK). An active participant in international surveillance programs such as SENTRY and SMART, he chaired the HIV study group of KLIMIK from 2017 to 2020 and founded the HIV-TR cohort, which includes 33 participating centers from various regions of Turkey. He retired from his position in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Marmara University School of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey, in September 2024.
